M Film Lab was proud to come together with our community for a special evening celebrating the premiere of Edward Said: Between Worlds at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Directed by Maiken Baird, the documentary explores the life, ideas, and enduring legacy of Palestinian-American professor, author, and public intellectual Edward Said, a remarkable voice whose work continues to resonate across generations and borders.

The premiere and after-party created an opportunity to gather around a film rooted in identity, culture, history, and the power of ideas. For M Film Lab, these are conversations that connect closely to our own belief in the importance of culturally specific storytelling and in creating more opportunities for distinctive voices to be developed, supported, and seen.

We were especially grateful to share the evening with Muslim House, whose presence helped make the celebration a meaningful gathering of community, culture, and storytelling.

The after-party was proudly co-sponsored by Malas Entertainment, continuing a shared commitment to supporting stories and filmmakers with distinctive perspectives. We are grateful for the partners, artists, and community members who came together to celebrate this important film and Edward Said’s lasting cultural and intellectual legacy.

Building Community Around Storytelling

At M Film Lab, we believe that supporting storytellers requires more than helping develop a screenplay. Writers need mentorship, relationships, advocates, and opportunities to connect their work with the wider film industry.

That is why gatherings like this matter to us.

They create spaces where filmmakers, writers, producers, partners, and members of the community can meet one another, exchange ideas, and build relationships. That same philosophy sits at the heart of M Film Lab: developing talent, strengthening stories, building connections, and creating pathways to opportunity.

We believe culturally specific stories can be deeply personal while still resonating universally. They can be artistically ambitious and commercially powerful. And when storytellers have the opportunity and support to tell those stories authentically, their work can reach audiences far beyond the communities from which it originated.

The premiere of Edward Said: Between Worlds was a meaningful reminder of the ability of film to carry ideas, histories, and perspectives across generations and borders.
